Why Are Helicopter Games So Addictive?

Have you ever asked yourself that? Well, maybe it’s just my bad habit of asking myself “nonsense” questions like this one here, now and then, but I’ve always wondered what is that “mechanism” behind each one of the great helicopter games that I’ve played online that kept me glued to my desk chair for hours on end, making it impossible for me to get out of trance before I managed to complete all the missions in the game. Sure, it must definitely be that once in a lifetime chance to actually pilot a helicopter but, I’m pretty sure there’s more to it than this obvious aspect.

Could it also be the fact that game developers are competing against each other (luckily for us, the players, the beneficiaries of their “struggles) for generating that feeling of being in a war zone (in 90% of the online helicopter games the action takes place during warfare)? The war scenes and the missions that we get at the beginning of each game, really give us the addictive illusion that we’re some sort of soldiers, soon to become war heroes, fighting against our country’s ruthless enemies. Could you refuse to accept the challenge of flying an awesome Chopper or an Apache GT8, equipped with different types of weaponry, and proving yourself worthy of being proclaimed your nation’s grand hero? Also, besides outstanding piloting skills, you’ll need to get yourself “armed” with great shooting skills and strategy skills, as well! Your adventure, there, up in the sky, as you become one with your helicopter, will be spiced up with all types of dares such as dodging missiles launched from the ground, firing against your enemies strategically positioned on the ground, not to mention the major dare of taking great levels of caution when you’re releasing your bombs or firing your machine gun that our helicopter’s equipped with, lest you should accidentally hit buildings where civilians live. If you think that playing helicopter games is merely just about the piloting, the ability of controlling your aircraft, then you couldn’t have been more wrong: the great majority of these games dare you with some highly challenging missions to be completed, while way up high, in the sky!

Another reason why we grow instantly addicted to this kind of online games is the given chance to walk into the shoes of some brave, risk-taking rescuers! The rescue mission is another widespread theme among helicopter games! Your task is to carefully pick up victims of different disasters (war, shipwrecks or natural calamities victims) and carry them to a safer place while, in some games, you’re being attacked, in the air or from the ground, by various enemies. Conscious of the fact that you’re these helpless people’s only hope, of the importance of your mission, you simply won’t be able to walk away from your PC until you haven’t successfully carried out your rescuing assignment.

Now, when it comes to the helicopter games’ addictiveness, how could we have possibly forget about those where you’re not playing the role of a war pilot nor of a fearless rescuer, about those games where your mission is merely to… keep your helicopter in the perfect condition as you fly it through a… tunnel. As apparently simple and nonetheless addictive as that! Keeping your vehicle away from the tunnel’s walls, finding the perfectly safe height and maintaining your helicopter at this height, while doing your best to advance, and pilot it out of the tunnel, will turn out to be… a surprisingly addictive mission to complete!

These are some of the reasons for my addiction to online helicopter games that I could dig up. Which are your “excuses” for playing them for hours of end?

Self-Pity – The ‘Luxury’ You Can’t Afford

Tragedy and misfortune strike people every day. We open the newspaper and read about terrible things that happen to others. We ourselves are not immune to having bad things happen in our lives. As bad as these things are, there is something even worse than the tragedy itself. It is self-pity.

You can see how this can happen. People get immersed in a horrible experience and their energy is sapped and their defenses are down and it becomes easy to fall into the trap of self-pity. They begin to dwell on their hurts and hardships, whether real or imagined, and begin to enjoy talking about them and sharing them with others.

Self-Pity a Luxury?

Why do I call it a luxury? The dictionary tells us that a luxury is something we indulge in, is something we enjoy, is costly and is not necessary. Self-pity fits that description perfectly.

Wallowing in self-pity, like all habits, is hard to overcome once we become accustomed to it. We become comfortable with it and find that it’s hard to do without. We look for others to commiserate and sympathize with. But self-pity is unproductive. It causes us to be bitter and unforgiving and resentful. Self-pity doesn’t bring people together – it divides them. When you throw a pity party, you are the only invited guest.

Self-Pity and Self-Image

Self-pity allows us to feel that we are victims. It’s how we begin to define ourselves. It creates a distorted feeling of security. It gives us an excuse for not trying. It creates in us a “What’s-the-use attitude.” It’s been said that the nice thing about self-pity is that if you can’t get others to feel sorry for you, you can still feel sorry for yourself.

Self-Pity and Self-Destruction

I’ve known people who have been in horrible marriages. Maybe their spouse had a problem with drugs or gambling or is an alcoholic. They have experienced untold suffering. We know they have because of their constant complaining to others. They are continually looking for a shoulder to cry on. Their life seems to always be full of drama.

Strange as it may seem, when that person finally ends the relationship they are unhappy. They have nothing to complain about anymore. No one feels sorry for them anymore. They don’t get the attention they once had. They no longer have a crutch to lean on and are expected to live a normal life just like everybody else. This is a real blow.

Invariably the injured person goes out and marries someone as bad or worse than their first spouse. They find another drug-addict, wife-beater, alcoholic or gambler to marry so they can indulge in self-pity again.

It’s natural for us at times to feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve all done it before and in reality it can help ease the pain of our trials. But when it turns into who we are and we continue to dwell on it and convince ourselves that we are victims and are in the hands of some uncontrollable fate, then it becomes detrimental to our well being.

If we permit ourselves to dwell upon our past hurts and injuries we are more likely to use them to justify our yielding to other destructive habits such as over-eating or drinking. We seem to think, “You would do the same if it happened to you.”

Self-Pity is for Losers

This may sound harsh but there are some who are losers because they want to be losers. They may not even be aware of it yet it is true. If things start to go well for them they get worried and concerned. They feel it can’t last. They then begin to self-sabotage their success. Why? Because they have become so used to feeling a certain way that the new feelings are uncomfortable to them. Since they have concluded that a loser is who they are then success is out of harmony with their self-image. They can’t stand that feeling.

It reminds me of a time when I needed to stop over at my church to pick up some papers. I was in my grubby work-in-the-yard clothes. I just needed to run in, grab what I needed, and leave. As I entered the church I realized there was another event taking place and everyone there was dressed in their Sunday best. I felt so out of place. I felt so uncomfortable. I wanted to get out of there as soon as I could and get back into the dirty and grimy environment of my yard work. I think that is why some people feel so uncomfortable when things start to go good in their lives. It is not compatible with the concept they have of themselves.

Overcoming Self-Pity

The solution is to realize that your unhappiness is caused by your self-centeredness. When you are continually focused on yourself it comes at the price of excluding all others. This self-absorption is like a fence around you that keeps out those who could lend you a hand. You have to take the focus off yourself and begin to see that there are those around you who also have trials and struggles in their lives and you can be someone they can lean on. And as you open up and reach out to help others, they in turn can help you.

Another way out of self-pity is through forgiveness – meaning your forgiveness of others. As you begin to forgive others of the perceived hurts and wrongs they have committed towards you, you can begin to heal and let go of the pain and self-pity. Is this easy? Not by a long shot. Is it necessary? Absolutely.

Helen Keller said,

Self-pity is our worst enemy and if we yield to it, we can never do anything good in the world.

Let us rise above self-pity and use our efforts and energies for more fulfilling and positive endeavors.

Thank you.

How to Get Started With Sports Betting

Sports betting is simply placing a wager on a sporting event. You are betting that your team, horse, dog, or driver will win. If they do win, so do you! If they lose, you lose your bet amount. Sports betting takes place all over the world, though in the United States this type of betting is not as highly accepted as it is in Europe.

Online sports betting is probably the best option for those who are interesting in trying it for the first time. If you have never tried online sports betting, you are missing so much fun and excitement, and it can all happen in the comfortable surroundings of your home! The art of sports betting can seem confusing at first, but once you are familiar with some of the jargon that is used to explain the concepts and logic behind each type of bet, it is all much easier to understand.

One of the best ways for you to experience this engaging way to bet on your favourite racing and sporting events is to get acquainted with online sports betting. However, in order to best take advantage of all that sports betting has to offer, you need to know a little more about it.

Sports Betting – The Odds

How does online sports betting work? You should start by studying the odds for the sporting event you are most interested in placing a wager upon. When using online sports betting, you can find these odds in the various online sports books used by Internet gamers everywhere. You must open an account with an online sports book before you can place your bet, but this is simple to do.

Once you have chosen where you are going to do your sports betting, you need to decide how you are going to place your bet. There are many different ways for you to wager your chosen amount of money, but first, let’s talk about the spread and how it can affect the amount you bet.

Sports Betting – The Spread

The spread is a point advantage in sports betting, which is usually given to the team that is generally expected to lose a particular sporting event. If you decide that you will bet on the team that is expected to win, they will have to win by more than the spread number and cover the spread before you are considered to have chosen correctly. If you choose the team that is expected to lose, that team will have to lose by less than the spread number in order for your pick to be considered correct. If by chance the team wins by the number of points that were chosen as the spread, the game is called a push.

No one who engages in sports betting wins a thing if a game is called as a push, but you do get the amount of your original bet back. The point spread is done in order to make the all of the bets come out even for the sports book, and is usually done for sports such as basketball or football.

Sports Betting – The Bet

If you were to bet against the spread, most likely you would place a type of bet called an 11-10, or spread bet. By betting $11, you win $10 if your team’s score covers the spread. This is another way that the online sports book makes its money.

An over-under bet is also an 11-10 bet. With this type of bet, the total score of the two teams that played will be either over or under the total score that was listed before the game was played. Betting on the score being over is called ‘betting on the ball’. Betting on the score being under is called ‘betting on the clock’.

A proposition bet is a type of bet where the online sports book chooses what the odds and the conditions of the bet are going to be. This type of bet can be most interesting, even a little fun at times, for the conditions can be as unusual as which of two football teams will make the most touchdowns, which of two basketball teams will score the most three pointers, or even which individual player will make a certain move for the team. The odds for this kind of bet are sometimes 11-10, but can be better or worse depending on the circumstances.

A parlay bet happens when you are betting on more than one event, usually three. This type of bet gives you a much higher payout if you should win, but the catch is that all the events you bet on will have to win. If even one of them loses, they all lose, and you lose the amount that you bet.

A money line bet seems rather formidable, especially to someone who is just getting into online sports betting, but it is really one of the simplest bets of all. It is also called a Straight Up bet, and there is no point spread to consider. You will just choose your sport, and then the team you think will be either the underdog or the favourite. In a money line bet, the sports book will have numbers listed that are in the hundreds, with either a plus or a minus sign beside them. These numbers are considered the ‘money line’, and are the multipliers for the bets.

If the money line for your team is listed as 100, you will make an even bet. This means you will wager the same amount that you will get back. If the money line reads -110, then you must come up with the amount of money you have decided to bet, plus 10%. This extra 10% is known by the name of ‘juice’. If the money line for your team is listed as +110, then you simply place your bet with the amount you choose to bet. If you win a money line bet, you get the amount of your bet plus 10% back. For example, if you bet $10.00 and $1.00 in juice on a -110 money line and it wins, you get $21. 00.

A teaser bet in sports betting is actually a proposition bet that allows you to change the odds for the bet in either direction so that the wager is in your favour. You can go up or down in points, and must choose at least two teams, as is done in a parlay bet. You can have as many as 6 separate teams included on a teaser bet, but all of the teams chosen have to win in order for your bet to be declared a winning one. Once the games are over, the points from the teaser bet are added or subtracted from the final scores. The odds for teaser bets can be different each time, so it is a good plan to always check the sports book before placing your bet.

A tip to remember is that generally, when placing a wager on any sport that can finish with a high score, such as football, you will have a spread. Sports where the ending score is low, such as in baseball will have a money line. Remember also that favourable odds on a game can sometimes work in your favour. Online sports betting allows you to easily go from sports book to sports book to find the best odds.

Soccer Betting – Winning Principle

When talking about sports betting, people usually think about soccer betting because it is the most popular betting among all sports betting. Almost everyone is well aware of the rules before they place their first bet on soccer. And somehow, soccer betting provides the most lucrative payout.

However, in order to win on soccer betting, one has to follow certain rules which guarantee their chance of winning. Believe it or not, soccer betting may be a game for some people, but a serious job for dedicating punters. The fact that 95% of punters lose on their bets does highlight that only less than 5% of all the players are serious punters.

You might ask what those rules are. Well, different professionals acquire different rules for themselves to thrive in their profession. Let’s just call soccer betting as a profession. Below are the basic rules that every punter should know.

Firstly, set a limit to what you can bet per day. Then, put a stop when you hit that limit. The reason is that punters usually double their stake after they lose the previous bet. That will surely dig further your pocket. So, remember, you always have tomorrow to win back all those losses.

Secondly, do not bet with your eyes closed. If you are not so sure about certain teams or certain matches, do gather more information about them before placing your hard-earned money on them. Do not lean on luck, because luck only comes if you worked hard.

Thirdly, find more detailed information about the matches, such as: opening odds, lineup of the teams, their current forms, and statistics of those teams… The more information you have, the more secured your bets are. Believe me, you should do your homework first, before you can count on luck.

And last but not least, in order to go a long way with soccer betting, one has to own right betting strategies. The right strategies are the ones that have been proven to work well for similar type of person like him, or for every punter. The right strategies are the ones that have helped others to pull in fortune. Of course, it is very hard, if not impossible, for a successful punter to reveal his winning strategies, because they are his winning secrets. However, there are punters who are too successful to care about keeping his winning secrets to his own. And this is an example: Soccer Bet Winning System [http://www.winsoccerbet.com]

Mobile Slots – 5 Simple Steps to Carrying the Slots in Your Pocket

Slots are coming a long way from its relatively simple design when it was invented in the 1800s compared to the vast improvements made to slots today. When Charles Fey invented the first three reel “one-armed bandit” in 1887 little could he have imagined the technological changes to his simple plan of a game played on a machine.

Today the halls of the big casinos echoes with the sound and lights of hundreds of highly computerized slot machines fine tuned with software that display a screen of virtual reels delighting, inspiring, and disappointing the millions who play slots every year. Now the slot machines are coming home, right on your home computer and you do not even have to go hopping on a bus or plane. Online slots are fairly new to slot machine players. The comfort, convenience and vast amount of information to help the novice of novice play online are overwhelming. Although online slots are fairly new the evolution of the slot machine continues, as hundreds of pound machines in casinos have been shrink and rolled up and placed right in the palm of your hands, beckoning to the tip of your finger.

Mobile slots are not all that different from online slots. The only major disparity is that you are playing on your cell phone instead of online or in a casino. Developers have created software that is just as live and colorful as the real thing. Here I will share with you five simple steps to get you spinning and betting on your mobile device in no time.

Step One-Get Internet Enabled Phone

In order to play slots on your cell phone you need an internet enable phone. The variety of branded cell phone that can connect online is numerous. Getting a suitable cell phone is essential especially the graphic quality of your phone in order to enhance your slot playing experience. It is recommended that you know where you will be playing mobile slot before you buy a new phone if you do not already have one. You should find out the requirements to play on your phone. Most sites that provide mobile slot games will prompt you to choose your phone from a list of compatible phones. You do not want to get a new phone and then find out it is does not meet requirements.

Step Two-Get a Carrier

After getting you internet ready cell phone, you will need to have internet connection service on your phone. If you already have an internet enabled phone you will need to enquire with your carrier if there are additional charges for connecting online. You will need to have your data plan activated if it is not already working. If you are not sure that you have data activated on your cell phone, try to visit the WAP website. If you are able to see the website then you have the service. It is always better to have an unlimited data plan with your carrier.

Step Three-Download Software

Once you have the phone and the connection it is time to download the software online. Not all slot gaming websites offer mobile slot action. You can always search for the ones that offer mobile slots. These sites use an application called wireless application protocol or WAP. WAP is used to by wireless communication devices like your cell phone. The address where the software is in the WAP application and the web address will reflect this. For example the address will be like this: www.wap.mobileslot.com

. Depending on your connection most downloads will be fairly quick and auto installation will begin.

Step Four-Sign Up

If you play already online with a website that offers mobile slots then you would use the username and password you already have. However if you do not have one then you will need to sign up and create a username and password. Signing up is just like signing up online.

Step Five-Spin n’ Win

With most mobile slot games you can use several mobile devices to connect and play. These include PDA or a laptop. Similarly to playing online you will have access to customer service and the chance to wager real money or play money. The wonders of technology has enable us to take the slots from the casinos, put them in our homes through a virtual world and now literally carry the slots in out pocket or purses to play when ever wherever. Mobile slots are great when taking a break, traveling or if you are a slot addict, just play when ever you want where you want.

Astrology – What It Is And Isn’t

Before we dive into the technical aspects of astrology and exactly how the science works, we first need to set the record straight about exactly what astrology is and what it isn’t, as their are many misconceptions about this science that need to be put to rest. Hopefully this article will be able to do just that.

Astrology, as a belief, is a science that essentially connects your outer world to your inner world to reveal the potentials that you have as a human being. This is not to say that the influences of astrology are absolute. Just because a person has an astrological chart that shows he will be a great leader of people doesn’t mean that this will necessarily come to pass. This is where free will comes into play.

Astrological influences are like little strings that tug on each person. How much influence these strings have on you depends on your own strength of will, or in the case of many people, lack of strength of will. For example, Astrological influences may cause someone to develop an addictive personality that will be prone to problems such as addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling or a number of other things. How likely that person is to actually become an addict depends a lot on their own free will and strength of will. This does not minimize the astrological influences, which could be very strong, but what it does is put them into perspective in that they are not absolute. Free will is always the ultimate decider. You can fight the influences, good or bad, or you can give in to them.

Where astrology comes into play is like this. It is easy to predict, using astrology, that you are going to have major changes come into your life at home. Perhaps outside forces beyond your control will force certain changes. For example, forces may indicate that your home is in some kind of danger, possibly from storm or fire or maybe even from a break-in. Where free will comes in is how you handle this news. You can choose to ignore it and possibly have your house get hit by a falling tree, or you can take precautions to avoid it which may include moving. Ultimately what you decide to do in response to the foreseen problem is what will ultimately determine the final outcome.

Now in the case of using your free will to wait to see what happens, some people would say that you are really doing nothing, That may be true. In that case the normal response to what happens would be that it was fate. This may also be true. But in either case, whatever you were supposed to learn from these astrological forces, you have learned. If you acted and it turned out well, then you learned to rely on your instincts to do something. If you didn’t act and disaster struck then you learned that maybe you need to be more decisive about things. In either case, fate of not, you learned your lesson from the astrological forces. This in itself could be called fate in that you were meant to learn the lesson in this manner.

Many astrologers believe that you really don’t have a choice. Ultimately what you decide to do has already been decided for you by the astrological forces themselves. In other words, if an astrologer tells you that your job is in danger of being lost and you are proactive and get another job before this happens, your actions were predetermined by the astrological forces themselves even though it was your own free will.

Obviously, that theory will be debated for centuries to come. But the point is, whatever the astrological forces have in store for you, ultimately it is up to you to decide how to deal with them. Therefore, astrology is not fortune telling. It is simply a warning of things that might happen depending on how you react or don’t react to the circumstances.

Tips on How to Quit Smoking Weed & Stop Living Life in a Haze

While the debate over marijuana, legality, health benefits and negatives rages on there are many people who are in strife who care little for all these arguments because they are addicted to weed and what the masses decided about the drug matters little when your own personal life is falling apart due to addiction which is a separate point completely to all the others. If you are one of these people and are looking for tips on how to quit smoking weed then first I encourage you to shut out all of the pro and anti marijuana campaigners because your struggle is a personal one not just with marijuana but with a psychological addiction which only has tenuous links to the particular thing you are addicted to.

This does not mean that there are not specific things you need to know about marijuana in this but it all must center around your personal struggle and not all the side bullshit that goes on to do with pot. To quickly summarize what you may need to know about cannabis is this:

  • Marijuana is not physically addictive like other drugs that have chemicals in them that you can become dependent on, while you can suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, vivid dreams, irritability, mild nausea and so forth by scientific measures pot is not a drug you can be physically dependent on.
  • Addiction is a mental disease that makes you believe you need something whether it be a drug or a behavior like gambling or sex. With Marijuana the mixed messages about the drug confuse people on what is addiction and what is dependence, if you are struggling to quit smoking weed you are addicted.
  • To confuse matters more many people who are dependent on a drug like heroin are also psychologically addicted in a double whammy that is terrible. This leads to a perception that pot is the same when it should be treated quite differently.

What this boils down to is that you CAN quit smoking weed but only if you treat this as a personal addiction that you can overcome by changing yourself and not blaming the drug first and foremost. This is not to lessen the deep pain, anxiety and helplessness that may come from living with an addiction at all nor is it to trivialize the task of climbing out of this pit of despair either as the demons of the mind are the cruelest and most punishing of all. These tips on how to quit smoking weed are just a way to set a framework you can use to realign the way you think which aids in the all important aspect of willpower which is the only real way to move beyond an addictive habit.

Quitting Smoking Pot is a Choice

Sounds obvious doesn’t it? However by choice what I mean is a carefully considered choice, a choice based on the knowledge of the benefits of quitting weed and the negatives of continuing to smoking pot. This is not a whim, a quickly drawn line in the sand or a spontaneous vow based on anger or fear or a whole host of emotions that have led to your initial acceptance that smoking marijuana is becoming hurtful to you. Choice is saying “I choose not to smoke pot” rather than saying “I love pot but I need to quit”. This may sound like a whole lot of useless semantics to many however it is a proven psychological technique that the WAY we say things and the WAY we think of things effects the outcomes because language dictates more than a simple meaning but a whole host of other desires, excuses, fears and connotations when structured poorly. So make a choice to quit smoking weed and make it an informed choice.

Action Vs Reaction

The writer Rita Mae Brown once said “A life of reaction is a life of slavery, intellectually and spiritually. One must fight for a life of action, not reaction.” and this should be a quote written down and emblazoned in your memory because this is not only good advice for life but also in the case of addiction. How often do you take action to smoke a bowl compared to as a reaction? How often is the ritual of smoking pot coming from a reaction to something: A bad day, a fight with your partner, an inconsolable sadness or rage. How often does it come from a seeming NEED to get high and zone out, a compulsion brought on my troubles or by habit compared to perhaps what it was like early on when it was exciting and fun. Those that tally up way more on the reaction scale may find the reason behind the need for their addiction from the troubles that beset them and realize that the drug is just an escape and the problems behind it are what really needs to be solved. Some may find it easier to work on the reason behind the need first and others may take heart that a deeper understanding of your personal demons can give you the strength to quit smoking weed which will allow you to face those challenges with a clearer head and more success. This is action, control of your own life rather than a reaction to compulsion and external influences which is reaction and as the quote said makes you a slave to it and to marijuana in turn.

Plan

As you may have guessed I am a fan of the written word and the practical application of words on paper may be paramount here. The choice to actively seek a solution to your problems and a change in your life to quit smoking pot will propel you forward but how to do this comes down to planning, goals and motivation. The catch 22 of this is that when you are an addict sticking with a plan and keeping motivation and goals can be difficult and a single bad day can feel mix up all of this in your head and suddenly a single smoke does not seem so evil, then another and suddenly a week has gone before you realize it and the self loathing sets in. STOP! That is the direction you do not want to take and you know it! This is where ink can be a help if not your salvation because a psychological addiction is something in your mind, if you keep all your plans in your mind it is bounds to be influences by the negative thoughts that will plague you so why would you want the pure and good new ideas being corrupted there. My advice is to write things down, write down all the bad things about smoking pot, write down all the good things that will come from being weed free, write down you plan of attack whether it be quitting cold turkey or gradually limiting your smoking down to none at all. Write it down and keep it because those words do not change no matter how much your demands mess with your mind your pledge taken at your most insightful and enlightened point will always be there to set you back on the track you know you want to be on.

Persistence Outweighs Performance

Some people may have an easy time when quitting a marijuana habit but others may not, there are so many variables in this mix it is impossible to predict but there is one truth to it and that is that the end outcome of being free of your addiction is worth more than any failures you have along the way. Most people who try to quit any addictive behavior do not do so on their first try, nor their second and many more beyond that often. This is disheartening and depressing but it does not need to be if you do not want it to be. Every time you fall, every time you give in, every time you blunder on your goal to giving up weed you learn something new about yourself and about the world and each of those experiences is ammunition for the next fight. Victory goes to those who persist and learn and adapt and survive so when you call your performance on quitting into question remember it is not how easy it is, it is if you make it in the end and if you maintain the drive despite the pitfalls that will ensure your success.

Causes of Divorce – The Three A’s

There are probably as many causes of divorce as there are individuals divorcing. Only the couple themselves can really make the decision as to whether it is genuinely “irretrievably broken.”

I would submit that there are three key areas that encompass the most of the real causes of divorce – the “3 A’s – Adultery, Abuse, and Addiction.”

Adultery is one of the leading underlying causes of divorce in this country. According to the electronic article “Adultery: Statistics on Cheating Spouses,” published by Eagle’s Nest Publications, “60-70 percent of adultery victims are women” while “30-40 percent of adultery victims are men.” In various countries adultery is illegal. In the United States, adultery is only legally recognized as grounds for divorce in a couple of states. However, adultery is usually one of the top reasons cited for divorce. This is not a new behavior, but modern technology, readily available sex partners and societal apathy seems to foster the behavior. There are many couples who have been able to survive an adulterous affair and rebuild a marriage, but this is usually a challenging process and takes a great deal of commitment. If the couple are not each focused on rebuilding a relationship of fidelity and trust, the marriage will likely not survive as a healthy relationship.

Abuse has so many faces, that it really is a study in and of itself. Perhaps it will suffice to say that abusive behaviors do not go away just because they are exposed to the light of day. Abuse, be it emotional, physical, sexual, or any combination, takes counseling and sincere and focused work and commitment to change. It often requires significant counseling and the work of a twelve step program to come to self-mastery. And, very often the abused cannot risk staying until the abuser masters herself or himself.

Addictions lead many people to become so dependent on a behavior or a substance that they no longer see how to abstain from it. These addictions – whether it be physical, such as drugs, alcohol, pornographic or sexual addictions, emotional, such as eating disorders, gambling or shopaholism, or other addictions, interfere with an individual’s abilities to place their priorities on their marriage and family relations. Everything becomes secondary. And as with abuse, the other spouse may not choose to endure the fallout in hopes that the addicted party can become sober from their addiction and remain so.

There are powerful 12-Step programs available that address the whole gamut of addictions, including pornography and sexual addictions, as well as substance abuse and gambling. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals suggest that these addictions are only mastered and controlled through a 12 step program, based on the original Alcoholics Anonymous model. Where there is addiction, there are victims of those addictions within the family, and healing best occurs if those victims of the addictions seek counseling and help as well as the addict himself/herself.

There are avenues of trying to deal with each of these problems, if both parties are determined to work at the solutions. In the short term, it may seem the more difficult choice. Often it does not work because the spouses are not equally committed to building a relationship that will survive.

Is Internal Porn a Real Addiction?

In today’s society, a large majority of the population still believes that only substances producing tolerance and withdrawal can lead to an addiction. As a sex addiction therapist, I’ve encountered many different articles and blog posts claiming that sex is an “excuse for bad behavior,” rather than an addiction. For example, after reading synopses of the book “The Myth of Sex Addiction,” I came to the conclusion that the author doesn’t seem to understand the root causes of sex addiction. This is a major problem.

For those uncertain if they have a problem and are considering seeking therapy for sex addiction, here are four basic addiction characteristics. As you read them over, keep in mind whether you experience these symptoms when you view pornography.

Compulsion to use

Inability to control use

Continued use despite adverse consequences

Cravings – psychological or physical

If any of the above strike a chord, sex addiction treatment is something you should consider.

Now think about your present situation in regards to tolerance (the need for more adventure or more time on the computer to achieve a similar “high”) and withdrawal (what you feel when you don’t look at porn, such as thoughts of depression, restlessness and anxiety). Make the diagnosis for yourself-could porn addiction treatment and sex addiction treatment improve your life?

If you’re still undecided, take some recent research into account. In 2011, The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) released a new definition of addiction, which they stated was based on biochemistry. As defined, biochemistry is a laboratory-based science that fuses together biology and chemistry to explore the chemical processes within and related to living organisms. By using chemical knowledge and techniques, biochemists can understand and solve today’s most imperative biological problems.

When watching porn, a protein called “DeltaFosBe” is released from dopamine spikes in the brain. An extreme amount of dopamine results in an accumulation of DeltaFosB in the brain’s reward circuitry. This turns on a binge mechanism, which then, as a result, leads to a number of other chemical and cellular changes.

If an accumulation of DeltaFosB appears in an individual’s brain scan, the person is an addict. Regardless of whether the addiction itself pertains to sex, porn, gambling, alcohol or drugs, the requisite brain chemistry labels you as an addict.

To put it another way, addiction is one disease, not many, and should be treated as such. Addictions in sexual behavior exist and are instigated by the same quantifiable brain alterations seen in substance addiction. The ASAM study also revealed that these changes in brain chemistry have the subsequent adverse effects:

Sensitization

Desensitization

Dysfunctional stress circuits

Hypofrontality

As seen above, sex addiction is a very serious problem, and should be treated for help, as with any other addiction. Hopefully, this article will assist you in determining whether you may have an addiction problem, and whether you should take the next step in finding therapy for sex addiction and porn addiction treatment.
